Widely acclaimed by serious climbers as a masterpiece of a mountaineering film. “Eiger Solo” is a documentary of the first British solo ascent of the Eiger North Face. Welsh mountaineer Eric Jones’ ultimate dream was to climb the notorious North Face of the Eiger, alone. The film also skillfully blends in expertly done reconstructions of the dramatic epics and tragic history of the Eiger North Face: the pioneering attempt by Sedlmeyer and Mehringer; the epic rescu of Tony Kurz; Harrer and Heckmair’s first ascent. The climax of the film recreates John Harlin’s 5,000 ft fall during the historic winter ascent of the Eiger Direct in 1966. Filming Eric Jones on his solo climb was almost as great a challenge to cameraman and filmmaker Leo Dickinson, who had to be lowered from a helicopter to Death Bivouac, high on the mountain to capture Eric’s progress on film. This film also contains rare interviews with Heinrich Harrer, Anderl Heckmair, Don Whillans and Adolf Rubi. “Eiger Solo” is probably the best of its genre on the subject and thoroughly deserves to be! regarded as a masterpiece of a mountaineering film, it will thrill and inspire both serious climbers and armchair mountaineers alike.
This DVD is region free and can also be played outside the U.S. and Canada so long as your equipment can play NTSC – most of the recently made set top players in Europe can do that.

Out of Sight was one of the best movies of 1998, but ironically this superior crime comedy was a box-office disappointment. Fortunately the movie can enjoy a long life on home video, where it can be savored by anyone who missed its original release. Making his best film since 1989’s sex, lies, and videotape, director Steven Soderbergh pays tribute to the signature wit and intricacy of Elmore Leonard’s novel, brilliantly adapted by Scott Frank, the gifted screenwriter who previously adapted Leonard’s Get Shorty. The movie’s a prime showcase for the talent and chemistry of George Clooney and Jennifer Lopez, respectively playing a career bank robber who’s escaped from jail and the federal agent who falls for his charms while tracking him down. Soderbergh directs with confident visual flair, shifting time- lines (a la Pulp Fiction) to weave together subplots and maintain vivid focus on Leonard’s splendid characters and smooth-as-silk dialogu. While the sexy repartee between Clooney and Lopez recalls the vintage interplay of Humphrey Bogart and Lauren Bacall, Ving Rhames and Steve Zahn add ample comic relief as Clooney’s accomplices. Dennis Farina is memorable as Lopez’s father, and Albert Brooks is almost unrecognizable as a Wall Street crook whose mansion–and a cache of uncut diamonds–provides the setting for the film’s climactic caper. As orchestrated by Soderbergh, the film offers a feast of plot twists and surprises, but it never loses track of its delightful characters and the clever wit that brings them so vividly to life. Madonna’s relationship with her father and brother, the maternal control she wields over her dancers, her giggly friendship with Sandra Bernhard, her crush on Antonio Banderas (later to become her costar in the movie version of Evita), the waning days of her relationship with Warren Beatty (who accuses her of wanting to exist only for the camera)–all of it becomes self-conscious fodder for a fascinating examination of modern pop stardom. –Jim Emerson

Before he became an overrated filmmaker, Cameron Crowe (Jerry Maguire) was a reporter for Rolling Stone who was so youthful looking that he could go undercover for a year at a California high school and write a book about it. He wrote the script for this film, based on that book, and it launched the careers of several young actors, including Jennifer Jason Leigh, Judge Reinhold, Phoebe Cates, and, above all, Sean Penn. The story line is episodic, dealing with the lives of iconic teen types: one of the school’s cool kids, a nerd, a teen qUn, and, most enjoyably, the class stoner (Penn), who finds himself at odds with a strict history teacher (a wonderfully spiky Ray Walston). This is not a great movie but very entertaining and, for a certain age group, a seminal movie experience. –Marshall Fine
