When Special Effects pioneer Ray Harryhausen received his lifetime acheivement Oscar, Tom Hanks said that anyone who was a boy of 10 in the 1960’s will tell you that “Jason and The Argonauts” is one of the greatest movies ever made.

Jason is here, with the living giant bronze statue, the vicious harpies, and of course the many-headed Hydra and its “children.” Terrific stop-motion fun for all ages. And without the aid of (yawn) computers, you just have to wonder, “How did he do that?”

Also in this bundle is Gulliver (see if you can spot June Thorburn, the grandmother from Absolutely Fabulous, in an early role), 7th Voyage of Sinbad (’50’s-era innocence with the first dueling skeleton on film, not to mention the future Mrs. Bing Crosby), and Golden Voyage of Sinbad (Dance of death with six-armed goddess Kali and Tom Baker of Dr. Who fame).

Eye of the Tiger, on the other hand, is of “so bad its good”/MST3000 caliber–with the Duke’s son, Patrick Wayne as So-bad–I mean, Sinbad–and chanteuse Margaret Whiting in her first (and last) dramatic role as the evil sorceress. And yes, that’s Dr. Quinn/Jane Seymour wondering how she’ll ever live this one down as a buxom princess with a baboon for a brother. I’m not kidding.

An extra treat with this set are the scores for Jason, 7th Voyage, and Gulliver by legendary screen composer Bernard Herrmann (Citizen Kane, Psycho). Juicy stuff.

Anybody who likes good old-fashioned matinee fantasy will want to own these treats.

Ray Harryhausen is responsible for two of the best fantasty films ever made: Jason and the Argonauts and The Seventh Voyage of Sinbad. The Golden Voyage of Sinbad is also a good film, though not up to the level of the first Sinbad film.

The 3 Worlds of Gulliver is minor and Sinbad and the Eye of the Tiger is a step down from the other two Sinbad films (though still with some good moments).

Missing from this collection is another interesting if flawed Harryhausen fantasy: Clash of the Titans. It would have been nice to have had that as part of the set.

Braceface is one of the better cartoons around. In a day and age of non-stop action cartoons and children’s wacky cartoons, Braceface offers a refreshing real-life plot with real life situations and problems. It offers the viewers life-lessons without being corny or over-educational. It really does a great job of portraying the awkwardness of teenage life without being a dark, “life is terrible” attitude. Truely one of the greater cartoons in existance.

Whoever wrote the review giving the show one star is so very very wrong. THIS IS NOT A LITTLE KIDS SHOW OKAY? I mean it deals with teenage things. By now you should know the little kids shows come on in the morning not around 4:30 or whatever.

And um, how would you feel if all your friends had had boyfriends and been kissed before you? This show has not done anything at all to my brain. I can type, write and everything everyone can do. Okay this is a great show for early teens and late teens. Anyone younger shouldn’t watch it. Oh, I watch shows and movies with swearing, and guess what? I don’t swear.

I think anyone who loves Kim Possible, That’s So Raven would love this show.

It’s easy to get blown away in the first few minutes of “Origin: Spirits of the Past,” where we’re treated to exquisitely creepy celestial visuals and a gorgeous theme song.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Origin: Spirits of the Past! Click Here

It’s also a suitable lead-in for this beautifully animated movie about a not-so-distant future in which human civilization lies in dystopic ruins, and a vast sentient forest has taken control. The animation is stunningly lush and complex, and the lone-hero rescuer story is surprisingly moving… and it almost makes up for the fact that the eco-friendly plot makes absolutely no logical sense.

When a young boy named Agito stumbles on an underground chamber, he finds a girl cryogenically preserved for the past three hundred years. Toola is understandably upset by this — and since she has an electronic neck device, her presence angers the Forest, who fear that she might be used by the militaristic land of Ragna. Of course, the Ragnan leader Shunack — another survivor from three hundred years ago — turns up to persuade her.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Origin: Spirits of the Past! Click Here

It turns out that Shunack wants to use E.S.T.O.C., a mysterious device that will return the world to the way it once was, and Toola rather understandably decides to help him. Agito’s only hope for stopping them — and keeping the forest safe — is to undergo “enhancement” that genetically bonds him to the Forest’s trees. But even that might not stop the might of Ragna’s armies… and stuff, especially since Shunack is also “enhanced.”

“Origin: Spirits of the Past” is a gorgeous film — the animation is lushly-drawn and full of ruined buildings, vines, shimmering glades, great writhing vines and vast moving mountains full of weapons. Some of the more chilling images (such as Agito’s dad slowly turning into a tree, or the seeming loss of Toola in a burning train) are exquisitely haunting, all the more so because they aren’t played for horror. It is, simply put, a gorgeous piece of work.

It also comes up with an intriguing and slightly eerie concept for a sci-fi movie — that plants engineered to withstand extraterrestrial life would mutate and become the dominant force on Earth, changing themselves even as they become integrated by humanity. The ruinous dystopia that results is both beautiful and disturbing.

The problem is, the plot makes no sense: presumably the whole living-in-harmony-with-Forest thing is symbolic of living in harmony with nature. But since the Forest was mutated by humans, wrecked the world, genetically altered the survivors and keeps civilization in a stagnant stranglehold, it’s about as unnatural as you can get. And the alleged bad guys just want to switch the world back to its pre-mutant-plant state when man and nature were in balance… meaning that the Designated Anti-Nature Bad Guy is actually the Pro-Nature Good Guy.

Evidently, logic need not apply. Even director Keiichi Sugiyama belatedly seems to realize this, so he throws a rather random “villains will destroy a town” twist into the mix to the bad guy will really seem, y’know, bad. It doesn’t quite work.

Additionally, Toola and Shunack are the most likable characters in the mix — Toola is understandably miserable and freaked by the loss of the world she once knew, and the people with it. And while Shunack has made his place in this remade world and gotten a position of power, he’s wracked by guilt over his part in the Forest’s rise. Agito is a pleasant little hero who goes to extreme lengths, but he seems rather bland by comparison.

“Origin: Spirits of the Past” is a gorgeous piece of animation with a hauntingly sober backdrop, but the actual plot about the Forest makes no sense at all. Enjoy for the copious eye candy, but don’t expect deep stuff here.

In under a year, Grey’s Anatomy has gone from a mid-season replacement show to one of the top rated dramas on television. The show consistently demonstrates that brilliantly written characters, a diverse cast, lots of romance, and loads of drama set in the fast-paced world of surgery makes for an wonderful combination. The 27 episodes of Season 2 build on the brilliance of season 1, delivering a knockout performance that is a must buy for any Grey’s fan.

Grey’s Anatomy is about the lives and loves of 5 young surgical interns at Seattle Grace Hospital. Placed in the most competitive and grueling internship a hospital has, Grey’s follows the doctors as they learn to become surgeons from some of the best in the business. Season 1’s nine episode run saw romance blossom between surgeries with intern Meredith Grey (Ellen Pompeo) and attending physician Dr. Derek Shepherd (Patrick Dempsey) as well as intern Christina Yang (Sandra Oh) and attending surgeon Preston Burke (Isiah Washington). Sparks also flew between fellow interns Dr. Izzy Stevens( Katherine Heigl) and Dr. Alex Karev (Justin Chambers) while Dr. George O’Malley (T.R McKnight) nursed an unrequited love on housemate Meredith. Every episode was filled with romance, comedy, drama, and tension.

Season 2 delivers more of the same, beginning with Derek’s previously unknown wife, Addison (Kate Walsh) showing up at Seattle Grace to try to win back her busband, who left her after she slept with his best friend. Confronted with two women he loves, Derek is forced to choose between them, a choice that would have wide reaching consequences. That choice and its consequences have become the central theme for the entire second season. Other continuing story arcs are Christina and Burke’s developing relationship, Izzy’s and Alex’s growing chemistry (thrown for a loop with the arrival of heart patient Denny), and Meredith’s still unfinished feelings for Derek, which in season 2 cause her to do some incredibly dumb things, including breaking fan favorite George’s heart. Series creater Shonda Rimes and the rest of the writing staff don’t shy away from making controversial choices with the plots, as evidenced in the shocking 3-hour season finale.

Week after week this is hands down the most addictive show on television. This show gets you so interested in the characters, some days you will love them and some days hate them, but you never stop watching them. Thanks to the guys at tvshowsondvd, we know that the 6-disc box set contains over 5 hours of Grey’s extras, including extended version episodes of Thanks for the Memories, It’s the End of the World, What Have I Done to Deserve This, and Losing My Religion, a fan roundtable featurette with the cast answering questions from fans, a Bailey featurette, set tour with Dr. Webbe, tons of deleted scenes, and several audio commentaries. The set is mixed in 5.1 Dolby Surround Sound, with a 1.78:1 aspect ratio. If you have never seen Grey’s, pick up both the first and second season sets. One of the best shows on television and Highly Recommended.

Grey’s Anatomy is one of the best shows I have seen in a Television world filled with way too many reality shows. I will be the first to admit I have never really been in to medical shows. I bought the first season of this DVD set for a couple of reasons. First because I knew it stared Katherine Heigl who stared in one of my favorite Tv shows Roswell, and secondly because I kept hearing buzz and saw how many positive reviews it got here on amazon. Now Grey’s Anatomy The Complete Second Season will be released on DVD this September. Grey’s Anatomy is a show that has just the right amount of comedy mixed in with just the right amount of drama, and those two things along with the great cast take this far just beyond another medical TV show. This show just keeps you coming back for more. Along with Desperate Housewives and Lost, Grey’s Anatomy is another welcomed addition and a great break from all those reality TV shows. According to the press release from Buena Vista/Disney The DVD set of Season 2 will include all 27 episodes on a 6 DVD set, (presented in widescreen with 5.1 Surround Sound) and will include the Bonus Materials below.

*Three Extended Episodes: Exclusive to the DVD are scenes too steamy for TV.

*Fan Roundtable: favorite “Grey’s Anatomy” actors answer fans’ most burning questions.

*Audio Commentaries

*Deleted Scenes

*And Much More

I think people need to be aware that the American Humane Society WAS present during the filming of this movie and none of the animals were treated inhumanely. The same person who wrote one of the Amazon reviews also wrote the same review at several other sites and is spouting misinformation.

That being said, the movie is adorable, my child loved it. He’s a fan of dogs and of dog sledding and he enjoyed every bit of it!

This direct-to-video movie is a sequel to last year’s Air Buddies. In this one, the five pups find themselves in Alaska, where they are soon befriended by Shasta, a Husky pup, and his owner, a young boy named Adam. The boy has big dreams of becoming a sled dog racer, and if the Buddies can get him to the finish line they will be on their way back home. They turn to a wise old Husky for mentorship, but on the day of the race, the Buds unexpectedly find themselves on their own. From what I’ve been able to see of the film I think many younger kids will love it (the puppies are cute), but adults will be bored.

Here are the bonus features:

Buy,Download, Or Stream Snow Buddies! Click Here

* Audio commentary (from the dogs!).

* A blooper reel.

* A hip-hop-style music video of “Lean on Me” by “Hannah Montana” star Mitchel Musso.

* Behind the Scenes “dog-u-mentary,” which gives you a tour of the set from the perspective of the video’s canine stars B-Dawg, Rosebud and Mudbud.

* A featurette on the film’s visual effects.

The movies are based in part on the 1997 feature film Air Bud.

My fiance and I both loved this movie when it was released and we still do. When we heard it was coming out on Blu Ray and on top of that 3-D we were beyond excited. Well that excitment was crushed when we got home, put it on and were almost given instant headaches from the old school red and blue 3-d glasses and the fact that no matter how hard we tried to see it, it just was nowhere near 3-d quality. We sat there contemplating whether or not it was just us or if the 3-d aspect of it sucked that bad and we came to the conclusion that it was definately the latter. So after a half hour of trying hard to like it we switched it to 2-d (thank god for blu ray for having that option) and saw how in 1080p it was almost 3-d itself.

Buy,Download, Or Stream The Polar Express Gift Set! Click Here

Needless to say the very next day I went back to the store I purchased it from and changed it for the regular blu ray version (which was $5 cheaper than the 3-d version and totally worth the purchase, 5 stars for that version.) It was very sad that it did not work out because such an amazing holiday movie with such great animation would be a no brainer to have as 3-d but unfortunately it just is not worth the headache and strain.

I went to see this movie tonight with a mentally handicapped friend – “Michael” — (from a L’Arche home here in Winnipeg, Canada). We were the first persons in the theatre for the very first evening showing in this city – and we were the last to leave. We thoroughly enjoyed ourselves – enchanted by the movie’s subtleties and happily exhausted by its roller-coaster rides.

Time and again, Michael (who is sensitive, compassionate and with a good sense of humor) turned to me in the darkness, smiling in appreciation at the exact same moments I turned to see his reactions. Each time this happened, it was at a moment in the film when some little detail, perfectly captured through superb ‘cinematography,’ brought moisture to my normally cynical eye, and a warm smile to Michael’s innocent face.

Buy,Download, Or Stream The Polar Express Gift Set! Click Here

Some examples: There is a lone, black child on this apparent ‘dream train’ to the North Pole – a girl of about ten or eleven years, and like a painting come to life, the miraculous technology at work in this film captures the particular sensibilities of this compassionate, black youngster — We see small mannerisms of someone comfortable with herself in a way the other (ten or so) white kids on the train are not. And the effect is profound — the movie audience, including some children of that same age group, went silent at such moments in the film.

My friend Michael – who has a ’savant’ genius for perceiving my emotions, and expressing them for me out loud in public — Michael turned to me with a delighted smile when the girl on the train reaches out to hold the hands of the poorest boy, sitting alone in the rear compartment; and later, she hugs two other boys, (one of them the central character) — at their final parting. At that moment I held up a finger to my lips to try to hush Michael, but couldn’t prevent him from saying aloud: “She’s such a sweetheart.” There were murmurs of appreciation in the darkness around us, responding to this innocent sentiment.

There is a sublime moment, on the back platform of the moving train — the Northern Lights glimmering in the distance — when the young girl joins in song with the poorest kid on the train (a younger boy from a dilapidated home on the “far side of the tracks”). I admit to being overcome with emotion during this duet (a lovely, strong melody with poignant lyrics) – and I blurted out loud to Michael, after the first chorus: “What a wonderful song!” The refrain includes the words “When Christmas comes to town.” [It's a song so good that, with some future 'cover versions' by serious musicians who could do it justice --- this "Christmas Comes to Town" song could, I believe, deservedly join the small list of true, Christmas 'classics.']

I’d have to agree with anyone who thinks this movie is a little short on plot. And yet . . . once you’ve suspended disbelief — beginning with an earth-shattering, Christmas-eve arrival of a steam-puffing, passenger train on a small-town Michigan street, directly outside the home of the movie’s central character — once we’ve swallowed that premise, the movie disarmingly embraces the child in us, (including our fears) and our reservations vanish without our noticing.

Just as great `realistic’ painters, (think Rembrandt or Vermeer) worked wonders of light & shadow that no mere photograph could ever capture, so too this computer-animated marvel takes your breath away through an accumulation of tiny but acute observations that could never be captured by conventional cinematography. Prime examples from the opening scenes:

A shaft of light illuminates the boy’s bedroom, and he is reflected in a chrome, automobile hubcap leaning against a wall; at once we share his view — through the keyhole of his bedroom door – we can see only the backs and the dressing gowns of mother and father, as they say goodnight to the boy’s young sister, after determining the state of her belief in Santa’s existence – a belief no longer shared by the older brother, whose eye is at the keyhole.

Later, on the train, there’s an exquisite close up of the boy’s face, a slight blemish above the pores on his upper right cheek; the `camera’ pans in rotation, capturing perfectly, the texture of the boy’s hair, and that of the young black girl sitting beside him — subtleties of such perfection one wonders if the unique, artistic accomplishment of “Polar Express” could ever be surpassed.

The film’s last scene, consists entirely of a close-up view of a small, silver bell (of the type associated with sleigh rides) with its attached ‘ribbon’ of red leather. The little bell helps make the final point about `Belief’ — in things unseen, (or forgotten, and thus inaccessible to some adults). So simple, so powerful, so enlightening an image. My friend Michael turned to me at that moment, with a radiant smile. And we just shook our heads in awe.

—-

Yes, this movie must have SOME shortcomings – one or two moments that don’t quite work as intended by the creators. But right now, in the afterglow, I can’t recall what they were. The film was just too satisfying an experience!

I’m a 57-year-old grandfather who happens to believe that “The Polar Express” is the first, true Christmas classic in almost 60 years. Not since the original Kris Kringle “Miracle” movie of 1947, has any film (to my jaded eye) so transcended our secular, commercial views of the Holiday Season, with such uplifting and fresh reminders of the timeless and true spirit of Christmas.

Wow. What a great DVD.

The one hour documentary featuring interviews with some of the cast, Robert Wise, Harold Prince, Sondheim, and some key crew members is completely engrossing. Home movie footage showing the filming of the movie is included. Examples of the techniques that the movie makers used to film a musical are fascinating. I was amazed that the knife scene, for example, is COMPLETELY counted out and the actor/dancers’ movements were choreographed down to the second (breath, two, three, four; stab, two three; look, two, three, four). Incredible! Rita Morena is particularly informative regarding the dubbing of her song “A Boy Like That”. The Robbins/Wise codirecting of the film is explained. And some of Natalie Wood’s original vocals are included. The documentary is invaluable for fans of the film.

As for the film itself, it looks and sounds incredible on my widescreen HDTV. The anamorphic transfer is very good.

The DVD is packaged very well. The book which accompanies the set is very cool, with a great introduction by screenwriter Ernest Lehman (who is one of my movie heros).

I’m very impressed with this special edition of WEST SIDE STORY. The film is a classic, and deserves such treatment.

“West Side Story” is proof that the sum of its parts can not only be greater than the whole, but possibly be the greatest!

Little known writer in Elizabethian England pens a drama about two star-crossed lovers. Flash ahead to the turbulent streets of New York in the late 1950s and early 60s. Turn feuding families to rival gangs. Add music, choreography, make it vital. Then find a brilliant director who knows what to show, and watch as it takes home every Oscar it can.

We know the story of this film but what’s important for you to know about here are the extras you get in this package that make it worth your while: The first disc is the film, preserved perfectly. And the second disc has your special features.

Buy,Download, Or Stream West Side Story! Click Here

First, you get a great documentary on the making of the film. Titled “West Side Memories,” Principals like Sondheim, Moreno, Chakiris, Beymer and more sit before the cameras and explain the process of preparing and executing what could be the finest example of the Hollywood Musical, ever. It’s a piece that’s could have been a stand alone DVD, it’s so rich with insights.

You also get an interesting “Storyboard to Film” montage, where you see the artist’s renderings of the scenes, and how those shots looked when they appeared in the film. You get to study these storyboards more carefully in several galleries on the disc. Lots of other goodies, like the theatrical trailers and photos galore… everything from Jerome Robbins’s cattle call for dancers to location shots during production!

And if that wasn’t enough, there’s a massive book that comes with the set, that includes the complete script of the film, the original lobby brouchure that theater patrons who attended the film received, which has more photos and info, and the newspaper clippings lauding the film as it took its place in movie musical legend.

It’s simply a valentine to a remarkable film, and a fantastic package, all the way around.

Highly recommended.

This 62-minute color DVD is taken from a war documentary done in 1944 and meant for Home Front theater audiences. It is absolutely superb. First of all, it is directed by Oscar-winning director William Wyler, who also did the ‘Memphis Belle’ news documentary. Second, it is carefully put together to give viewers a feeling for what life was like on a great American aircraft carrier in the Pacific in World War II. Third, the whole thing is in exceptionally good color. The film follows the ‘Fighting Lady’ (not her real name, because of the war and because it represented all the carriers) from the time the first planes arrive and land on her decks through a series of hard-fought campaigns, including Kwajalein, Truk and the ‘Marianas Turkey Shoot’. The footage is excellent, whether showing the daily lives of men on the ship, from the captain to the pilots to the cooks and dishwashers, or showing actual combat footage taken from the gun cameras of American fighters and fighter-bombers. The action footage is amazingly good. Narration is provided by Robert Taylor, an actor who was a Naval Reservist during the war. It is first-class in every way. I recommend it for anyone interested in life on aircraft carriers in World War II, in good color combat footage, in watching planes take off and land on a narrow, pitching deck, or WWII naval history in general. This is a bargain at twice the price.

An outstanding example of the wartime documentary, in color no less. Not exactly politically correct, but what do you expect? We didn’t start the damn war.

I’ve loved John Lennon all my life and this movie is an excellent canvass of his life. Though the film takes you through all 40 years of John’s life, the emphasis is on the period 1970-71, where the bulk of the film rests. There is at least thirty minutes of fascinating footage from 1970 and shows John in the studio, recording the album “Imagine” with the gnome-like Phil Spector sitting in the control booth. One of my favorite scenes is John rehearsing and singing the beautiful “Jealous Guy” in front of the microphone. What a time piece!

Another lovely scene takes place at John’s Titenhurst mansion in 1970. A homeless hippy has been sleeping in John’s garden and the camera shows John and Yoko confronting him. The hippy rhapsodizes about the Beatles song “Carry that Weight,” and extols the lyrics. John sardonically says, “Yeah, well that was *Paul* singing that!” Then the Lennon’s invite the homeless man in for some breakfast.

There is additional footage from the early 70’s of John with George Harrison. The interviews with Elliot Mintz are OK, but I would have preferred more actual footage of Lennon. They show some footage from his 1971 concert and much backstage material and interviews. There is plenty of information and film of the aftermath of his tragic assassination and the rivers of tears that produced. The years of the Beatles are covered, but not in any great depth. Get the Anthology for more in-depth material on the Fab Four. In short, a lovely film about one of the cultural icons of the 20th century. If you love John Lennon, get this film.

December 8, 1980 – New York City
“John Lennon, the guiding spirit of The Beatles, dead tonight at 40.”

Those immortal words at the end of the movie bring tears to everyone who was a fan of John Lennon. I remember hearing and seeing that news report from a hospital bed at 6 years old. It was and always will be a tragic memory. The man who resurfaced after a 5 year absence with a powerhouse of music destined for new life had been cut short just a few hours after an interview where he said:

“My work won’t be finished until I’m dead and buried. And I hope that’s a long, long time.”

The long time was 2-3 hours.

The movie is an intimate portrait of Lennon’s life and legacy. It exposes the chaos behind the myth, as well as the genius behind the man. With all the tales from friends, associates, Paul, George, Ringo, and George Martin on “The Beatles Anthology,” this one focuses on Lennon’s life in his own words and home videos. Taken directly from the archives of the man himself, there has never been a better documentary on Lennon. From Liverpool beginnings to the end in New York City, watch the boy become a superstar, the superstar into a man, and the man become a legend.

Remember John Lennon 1940 – 1980
